What Is Preventive Dentistry?
Preventive dentistry means staying ahead of problems instead of reacting to them. Regular checkups let us catch small issues while they're still small — before they turn into root canals, crowns or extractions.
A typical visit is straightforward. We look at the teeth and gums, clean what brushing cannot reach, and take X-rays only when they change a decision. You leave knowing what is healthy, what to watch, and whether anything needs treatment soon.
Most people do well on a six-month rhythm. If your gums bleed, you get cavities often, or a medical condition affects healing, we may suggest coming in a little sooner.
Benefits of Preventive Care
- Lower lifetime dental costs — small fixes are cheaper than big ones
- Protects overall health, since gum disease is linked to systemic conditions
- Keeps your smile looking the way you want it to
- Catches oral cancer and bone loss early, when outcomes are best
Digital X-Rays
Low-radiation imaging reveals cavities between teeth and bone changes hidden beneath the surface.
Comprehensive Exam
We evaluate teeth, gums, soft tissues and jaw joints to identify concerns early.
Periodontal Evaluation
An assessment of gum health and the early indicators of bone loss.
Oral Cancer Screening
A quick, painless screening performed as part of your regular preventive appointment.
Pediatric Dentistry
Preventive care for children that builds good habits and protects developing teeth.
Between Visits
The cleaning only holds if the daily routine does. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth once a day, and ease up on frequent sugary drinks. Those three habits prevent most of what we would otherwise have to repair.
If your gums bleed when you floss, do not stop. Bleeding usually means the area needs more cleaning, not less. Mention it at your next visit so we can check whether it is simple inflammation or something that needs a deeper cleaning.

What's Included
A preventive program at our office typically combines several of the following, tailored to your risk level. Not every patient needs every item at every visit. We add imaging or a gum recheck when your history calls for it, and we skip it when it would not change your care.

Professional Cleaning
Our hygienists remove the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing can't reach. They also polish surface stain and record gum measurements so the next visit can be compared with this one.
