How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligner trays that shift your teeth gradually into position. You wear each set for a couple of weeks, then move to the next one in the series.

Because they're removable, you take them out to eat, brush and floss — which means no food restrictions and far easier hygiene than fixed braces allow.

Treatment starts with a digital scan rather than a traditional impression. We use that scan to show the projected movement and to say clearly if aligners are a good fit or if another option would be more predictable.

You switch to the next set of trays at home on the schedule we give you, and we see you periodically to confirm the teeth are tracking. Small tooth-coloured attachments are sometimes bonded on to help a tray grip, and they come off when treatment is finished.

Living with Your Aligners

Wear the trays about 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out to eat and to brush, rinse them, and put them back in. Leaving them out for long meals or overnight is what stretches a case past the timeline we showed you.

Store the trays in their case, not in a napkin. Switch to the next set on the day we give you, and bring the current trays to every check. If a tray no longer seats fully, stop and call rather than skipping ahead.
